Few places in New York City are as famous as Central Park, but its vastness and bucolic nature can obscure its fascinating history. This tour, focusing on the southern third of the park, digs beneath the surface — indeed, we’ll talk about the rocks and soil that lie underneath, as well as why the park got created, how it was designed and built, who and what had to be uprooted to make it happen, and the park’s subsequent ups and downs (and ups) over the past 150 years.

We’ll also visit some of the most beloved parts of the park, providing a great opportunity to see all the diverse landscapes here and some classic photo opportunities (we’ll be happy to man the camera for you).

Highlights include:

  • Ancient and awesome geological features

  • Walks over and under the park’s many famous bridges and arches

  • The formal areas: The Mall, Bethesda Terrace and Fountain

  • The wild, meandering Ramble

  • The Lake and Bow Bridge

  • Strawberry Fields

We focus on telling great stories and making our tours like being shown around by an (exceptionally well-informed) friend. This illuminating and invigorating tour will show you why Central Park is a cherished space in New York City.

LENGTH:  2.5 hours
